Sharon Morrell Teen Marine Science Institute Award

Sharon Morrell
3/13/74 – 9/4/18

Sharon served as Sr. Manager of Student Engagement for the Center for Aquatic Sciences where she passionately worked for almost 20 years. Sharon’s legacy remains in the lives she touched and the programs she innovated. “You cannot discover new oceans unless you have the courage to lose sight of the shore” exemplified Sharon’s approach and a motto she tried to instill in everyone she met. Sharon engaged people of all ages and particularly enjoyed sharing her love of marine life with teens. She happily led groups of teens kayaking through the pinelands, wading through wetlands and exploring beaches. Sharon mentored teens in the care of our animal collection and occasionally taught biology at a local high school. She believed teens wanted opportunities to connect with one another while embracing their passions and curiosity about the natural world.  The result of her dream was the creation of the Teen Marine Science Institute (TMSI). TMSI is a monthly program for teens to utilize the experimental method exploring marine science topics with the goal of creating a new generation of environmental stewards. The Center is grateful for Sharon’s years of dedication and creativity.

In her honor, the Center for Aquatic Sciences has created the Sharon Morrell Teen Marine Science Institute Award.  The award covers all program costs for a year to encourage a deserving teen to “discover new oceans” with courage and passion, just like Sharon.
